Create Your First Design
This guide demonstrates how to create a print-ready 3.5 x 2 inch business card with margins and bleed using Print for Figma.
1. Open the Plugin
- Open a new or existing Figma file.
- Press
Cmd+K(Mac) orCtrl+K(Windows) to open the Actions menu. - Search for "Print for Figma" and run the plugin.
2. Select the Layout Preset
In the plugin's Create tab, look at the sidebar on the left.
- Expand the Miscellaneous category.
- Select the Business Card (3.5 x 2 in) preset. The layout dimensions will automatically update to 3.5 for Width and 2 for Height, and the unit will be set to inches.
3. Configure Margins
Margins define the safe area for your text and logos, protecting them from normal cutting variations during the printing process.
- Toggle the Margins section on.
- Enter
0.125for all four sides. This establishes a 1/8-inch safe zone inside the trim edge.
4. Configure Bleed
Bleed is the extra artwork that extends beyond the final cut size, ensuring the print reaches the physical edge of the paper without white borders.
- Toggle the Bleed & Crop Marks section on.
- Enter
0.125for the bleed value on all sides. - Leave the Bleed Mode set to Expand. This adds the bleed area outside your 3.5 x 2 inch target dimensions.
5. Generate the Frame
Click the Create button. Print for Figma will generate a new frame on your canvas.
- The frame will be larger than 3.5 x 2 inches to accommodate the bleed.
- Visual layout guides (red/pink and blue lines) will appear to denote the bleed area, trim line, and margin safe area.
6. Design and Export
When designing, ensure all background colors and images extend fully to the outermost guide (the bleed edge). Keep all critical text inside the innermost guide (the margin).
Once the design is complete:
- Select the business card frame.
- Open the Export tab in Print for Figma.
- Select Single PDF or Separate PDFs.
- If your printer requires CMYK color space, enable Color Conversion and select the appropriate ICC profile (Pro feature).
- Click Export to generate the final PDF file.
