A4 Paper Size
A4 measures 210 × 297 mm, which is 8.27 × 11.69 inches. It is the most widely used paper size in the world, defined by ISO 216 and adopted as the standard document format in nearly every country outside the United States and Canada. A4 is the default for letters, reports, forms, and general office printing.
What Size is A4 in Inches?
A4 is 8.27 × 11.69 inches (210 × 297 mm), slightly narrower and taller than US Letter (8.5 × 11 in). A4 is the standard document size in most countries outside North America.
| Unit | Width | Height |
|---|---|---|
| Inches | 8.27 | 11.69 |
| Millimeters | 210 | 297 |
| Centimeters | 21.0 | 29.7 |
A4 in Pixels
Pixel dimensions depend on your target DPI (dots per inch). Higher DPI means more pixels and sharper print output. 300 DPI is the standard for commercial printing.
| DPI | Width (px) | Height (px) | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 72 | 595 | 842 | Screen display, digital proofs |
| 150 | 1240 | 1754 | Draft printing |
| 300 | 2480 | 3508 | Standard commercial print |
| 600 | 4961 | 7016 | High-quality or fine art print |

A4 with Bleed
When preparing files for commercial printing, add bleed — extra design area beyond the trim edge that gets cut off during finishing. The standard bleed for ISO sizes is 3 mm per side.
| Measurement | Width | Height |
|---|---|---|
| With bleed (mm) | 216 | 303 |
| With bleed (inches) | 8.50 | 11.93 |
| Pixels at 300 DPI (with bleed) | 2551 | 3579 |
Size Comparison
A4 is slightly narrower and taller than US Letter size (8.5 × 11 inches). The A4 size in inches — 8.27 × 11.69 — means it is 0.23 inches narrower but 0.69 inches taller than Letter. When designing documents that need to work on both A4 and Letter, use margins of at least 0.75 inches on all sides. A4 is half of A3 and twice A5.
Common Uses
- Standard documents, reports, and contracts worldwide
- Letterheads and business correspondence
- Forms, invoices, and official paperwork
- Printing, photocopying, and faxing
- Brochures and marketing collateral
Design Tips
- A4 is the global default, but if your audience includes North America, always test your layout on US Letter (8.5 × 11 in) as well. Use safe margins to accommodate both sizes.
- At 300 DPI, A4 produces a 2480 × 3508 pixel file — lightweight and easy to work with in any design application.
- For two-sided printing, ensure consistent margins on both sides. Bound documents may need a wider inner (gutter) margin.
- Two A4 pages side by side equal one A3 sheet, useful for booklet imposition.
Setting Up A4 Files
A4 is a default document size in virtually every design and office application — Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and Canva all include it as a standard preset. When designing for print, add 3 mm bleed and set your images to 300 DPI. For teams using Figma, the Print for Figma plugin adds a built-in A4 preset with bleed setup, resolution checking, and CMYK PDF export.
