Regional Standards

RegionWidth × Height (in)Width × Height (mm)
US / Canada3.5 × 288.9 × 50.8
Europe / UK3.346 × 2.16585 × 55
Japan3.582 × 2.16591 × 55

The US card is slightly wider and shorter than the European standard. If you distribute cards internationally, design at the largest dimensions needed and keep critical content within the smallest safe area.

Business Card Size in Pixels

Pixel dimensions depend on DPI (dots per inch). 300 DPI is the standard for commercial printing.

Business Card with Bleed

Standard bleed is 0.125 inches (approximately 3 mm) per side.

Set your document to the bleed dimensions and place trim marks at 3.5 × 2 inches. Extend backgrounds and images to the bleed edge so no white border appears if the cut shifts slightly.

Common Uses

  • Contact information exchange at networking events and meetings
  • Brand representation and first impressions
  • Appointment reminder cards (medical, salon, automotive)
  • Mini loyalty or punch cards
  • Quick-reference cards (tips, pricing, menus)

Design Tips

  • Use 300 DPI minimum for sharp text and crisp logos.
  • Keep all text and essential elements within the safety zone — at least 0.125 inches (3 mm) inward from the trim line.
  • Standard business cards have square corners. Rounded corner variants (typically 0.125 in or 0.25 in radius) are available at most printers — confirm the die-cut template before designing.
  • Avoid placing small text or fine lines near the edges where cutting tolerance could clip them.
  • Design both front and back — the back is valuable real estate for a tagline, QR code, or social handles.
  • For a deeper look at resolution and DPI, see our DPI guide. For bleed setup, see the bleed guide.

How to Design a Business Card

Most business cards are designed in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, or Canva. Set your document to 3.5 × 2 inches (or your regional standard), add 0.125-inch bleed on all sides, and keep text and logos within the safety zone. Export as a press-ready PDF with fonts embedded and images at 300 DPI or higher.

If you prefer a collaborative, browser-based workflow, Figma works well for business card design. The Print for Figma plugin adds print-specific features that Figma lacks natively — including a built-in Business Card preset, automatic bleed and crop marks, DPI checking, and CMYK PDF export. You can go from design to print-ready file without leaving Figma. Learn more about designing business cards in Figma →
