Common Uses

  • Trade shows and conference booths
  • Retail storefront and point-of-sale displays
  • Outdoor advertising and street banners
  • Event backdrops and step-and-repeat walls
  • Construction site branding and hoarding
  • Indoor directional and wayfinding signage

Design Tips

  • Large banners are viewed from a distance — 150 DPI is typically sufficient. Use 300 DPI only for banners with fine text or close-up viewing.
  • For readable text, use a minimum of 1 inch of letter height for every 10 feet of intended viewing distance.
  • Vector graphics (logos, icons, type) are preferred because they scale to any banner size without resolution loss.
  • You can set up files at half the physical size with double the DPI (e.g., 16.5 × 40.5 in at 300 DPI instead of 33 × 81 in at 150 DPI) — the output is identical.
  • For resolution guidelines, see our DPI guide. For bleed setup, see the bleed guide.

How to Design a Banner

Large-format banners are typically designed in Adobe Illustrator or InDesign, often at half scale with a proportionally higher DPI. Use vector graphics and large, readable fonts — text should be at least 1 inch tall for every 10 feet of expected viewing distance. Confirm your printer's preferred file format and bleed requirements before starting.
