Design Tips
- For window envelopes, confirm the window position and size with your printer before designing. Standard window placement is 0.875 in from the left and 0.5 in from the bottom.
- Follow USPS or local postal guidelines for address placement, barcode clearance zones, and postage area.
- Account for the flap when designing full-bleed envelopes — the flap adds material that needs printing.
- For bleed setup, extend artwork past the trim line. For resolution guidelines, use 300 DPI minimum.
How to Design Custom Envelopes
Custom-printed envelopes are typically designed in Adobe InDesign or Illustrator. Set your document to the envelope's flat dimensions, add bleed if printing full-color backgrounds, and define safe areas for the return address, recipient address, and postage. Many commercial printers provide downloadable envelope templates with die lines and fold guides.
For teams using Figma, the Print for Figma plugin lets you set up any envelope size with custom dimensions, add bleed and margins, and export a press-ready CMYK PDF. This makes it easy to keep envelope designs consistent with the rest of your brand collateral in one collaborative tool. Learn more about designing envelopes in Figma →
